Antioxidant-rich foods, as well as foods and beverages high in certain vitamins and minerals, can be beneficial for lung health when consumed in a balanced manner. However, none of these foods can replace medications used to treat diseases, nor do they have therapeutic properties.
When my patients ask, "So, doctor, what should I eat and drink, what is good for my lungs?" it is challenging for me to answer because, as a physician who believes in evidence-based medicine, I don't think any food can replace medication. However, based on my research, I'd like to mention a few foods that are said to be beneficial for lung health.
Orange-colored fruits with antioxidant properties, green leafy vegetables, nuts like almonds and pumpkin seeds, and green tea can be considered beneficial for the lungs.
Garlic is well-known for its antibacterial properties. A study conducted in China in 2016 found that consuming raw garlic more than twice a week was associated with a lower incidence of lung cancer.
Another study from 2020 showed that ginger might help prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy drugs used in lung cancer treatment. This approach improved patients' compliance with chemotherapy.
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antibacterial effects. Its anticancer effect is primarily due to its ability to trigger cell death. You can add it to your meals.
Beetroot is gaining attention in the sports community for its potential benefits in endurance sports and oxygen intake. Beetroot contains high levels of dietary nitrate, which can be converted into nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide helps dilate blood vessels, improving blood flow and increasing oxygen delivery to muscles.
Several studies have shown that beetroot juice supplementation may positively impact endurance performance. Nitric oxide produced from beetroot nitrates can enhance exercise efficiency and increase endurance. Additionally, beetroot consumption has been linked to improved oxygen intake during exercise.
While improved oxygen utilization can contribute to better athletic performance, especially in activities requiring long-term aerobic endurance, it's important to note that individual responses may vary, and more research is needed to fully understand the specific mechanisms and effects of beetroot on endurance sports and oxygen intake.
In addition to the positive aspects of beetroot juice consumption, there are potential health risks. Drinking beetroot juice may increase nitrate intake beyond the daily acceptable limit, potentially leading to the formation of some carcinogenic compounds in the body.
For individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),a healthy and balanced diet is essential for supporting overall health and managing symptoms.
Some nutritional recommendations for COPD patients include:
For individuals with asthma, here are some dietary suggestions:
Fruits and vegetables: Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet, as they are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that may help reduce inflammation. Examples include blueberries, citrus fruits, kiwi, broccoli, spinach, and kale.
Vitamin D: Adequate levels of vitamin D may help reduce the risk of asthma attacks. Good sources of vitamin D include fish, fortified dairy products, fortified plant-based milk, and sunlight exposure (following recommended guidelines and with care).
Magnesium: Some studies suggest that foods rich in magnesium may have a positive effect on asthma symptoms. You can include magnesium-rich foods like spinach, Swiss chard, almonds, cashews, and black beans in your diet.
